Chapter Twenty

The ladder brought me to another unpleasantly cramped space. I found the nearest way out, another odd-shaped door that took me into the coat closet on the first floor, underneath the stairs. Yet again, I found myself in another of the house's trouble spots, our cameras looking back at me.

Stepping around the cameras, I opened the coat closet door and stepped out in front of Stacey and Nicole, who jumped as they reached the bottom of the stairs.

“How did…?” Nicole looked from me to the top of the stairs, as if I might have invisibly streaked past them.

“There's a ladder between the walls,” I said. “Someone was very interested in being able to move around this house without being seen. There could be more of these hidden passages. Maybe they were built as the house was subdivided during the boardinghouse years.”

“But why?” Nicole asked.

“That's a good question, and I don't have an answer for it. But if the renovations were done by Jack, maybe he built the hidden doors and secret tunnels. He could have worked them in while chopping up the rooms for the owner.”

“And then what? He crawled around spying on people while they slept?” Nicole shivered, probably remembering the ghostly face and hand from her mirrored armoire door.

“Possibly,” I said. “And it looks like he's still using those hidden passages now, as he haunts this house. They could serve as liminal spaces for him, where he crosses back from the world of the dead.”

Nicole looked up along the grand, showy staircase, with its monumental posts, recessed panels, and intricately decorated balusters. “The woodwork is half the reason I wanted this house so much. Now we discover it's the handiwork of a murderer. A child murderer. Even just from a real estate standpoint, this is a nightmare.”

“I'm concerned that Jack might be taking control of Jason,” I said. “Maybe it started with just his hands, teaching him to carve.” I told her the entity had seemed to speak through Jason, claiming Jason was asleep.

Nicole looked understandably shocked.

“This whole move was a mistake,” she said. “I thought a big change would be good for us, and I wanted to finally feel some real independence from my family for once, from my older sisters, from everyone else always thinking they know what's best for me. Now I just want to run home to them and admit I was wrong.” Her eyes shone with tears. She wiped them away, but she couldn't wipe the worried, frightened expression from her face. “Should we move back?” she asked me, her tone desperate.

“I…can't tell you what major life choices to make,” I said, feeling sorry for her and somewhat panicked at her turning to me for life advice. Death is my usual focus; when it comes to living, I'm a little clueless. “If there's somewhere else you and your family can stay while we investigate, that could only reduce the risk to them.”

Nicole seemed to think it over, frowning deeply. “We can't pack up and go back to Kansas City.
